NEW YORK CITY
“Forgive me, father, for I have sinned. It has been far too long since my last confession.”
*The dead of night. The stench of the cold rain pours over the city of New York, focusing on a small apartment building. It’s derelict and falling apart at the hinges. The windows boarded up, the shingles on the roof are slowly falling onto the sidewalk. The door, however, was broken off of its hinges from outside.*
“Tell me, my son. What plagues you tonight?”
*Inside of the building, the hall is decorated with battered, bloody, and critically injured men. Criminals mostly, their blood even decorating the blue wallpaper. From the floor above we can hear screaming and the sounds of a brutal confrontation.*
“I fear I lost myself again.”
“Explain my child?”
*Going up the stairs, we see more signs of a brutal battle. A man’s head shoved into the wall, one individual lying unconscious with a broken jaw, and the worst of them all was an individual who was sent flying through the wooden railing and onto the floor under them. The sounds of combat growing louder with every second.*
“My grandmother always said that my father and I had something in us. She said, “Careful of them Murdocks. They got the devil in ’em.” As a kid, I didn't believe it all that much. Thought it was just spiritual fiction. But then, I saw my dad’s first major fight. He began to stagger and lost his balance after taking a strong right hook to his face, I was scared that he was gonna lose the fight. But then something changed in him. His eyes went dull, he stood tall and just simply looked at the guy. It was then I saw it.”
*A man is then dropped from the second floor, his injuries dire as he’s missing several teeth and looked like he was on the receiving end of a Heavyweight MMA fighter. It’s there that we see him.*
“I saw the Devil.”
*Daredevil growls in anger as he holds up his fists and charges forward to the remaining criminals that he faces. The battle between the Devil and the criminals is brutal. Bones are broken, blood-splattered, and a man’s arm is horribly damaged. Daredevil rushes the remaining three and incapacitates one as he opens fire on the crimson vigilante. The bullet scratches Daredevil’s shoulder causing him to hiss in pain before lunging at the criminal and taking him down via Clothesline to the throat. Once he lands, the man falls unconscious as he places him in a chokehold. Daredevil soon stands and faces the last two and he then smiles with blood coming from his mouth. He then speaks.*
“Come on.”
“I was honestly scared when I saw it. My dad won but afterward, something changed in me. I was scared that I might have it in me too.”
“Do you?”
“Father believe me.”
“I’ve got it and it got out.”
*Daredevil roars as he lands a solid and powerful punch onto the face of one of the criminals shattering his nose and coating the costumed hero’s fist with even more red. He then set his sights on the last one who ran out of the room and out of the building.*
“And when it did, I couldn’t stop.”
*Panting after his battle, Daredevil draws his Billy Clubs and leaps out of the window from one of the rooms. He then begins to pursue the remaining criminal on foot, his breath now ragged and raspy, and the blood from his gunshot wound leaks onto the rooftops.*
“After lashing out, it just wanted more. I couldn’t stop myself.”
*The criminal rushes into an alleyway terrified as he ducks next to a dumpster fearing for his life. He curls up into a ball and shakes as the images of Daredevil’s brutality haunt his mind. It’s then a large horned shadow appears above him. He looks up and screams in terror.*
“Did you want to stop?”
*Silence then fills the area. He then answers.*
“No. I didn’t”
“AAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!”
“I didn’t want to feel that way. But I didn’t regret it. That anger I felt.”
*Daredevil’s Billy Club connects to the terrified crook’s face, spewing blood before kicking him in the stomach hard enough to cause the man to regurgitate. Daredevil pants and continues his assault on the man, each punch and each attack growing more savage and more powerful. He then stops as the man under him groans in pain and begins to sob. Daredevil then grabs him and slams him against the brick wall. The man’s tears are no longer held back as Daredevil glares into his tear-filled eyes, with nothing but fury and hellfire inside of them.*
“I wanted them to suffer. To feel that pain that I felt.”
“You wanted to deal out vengeance.”
*Once again, he falls silent.*
“Yes. I did. I wanted him to suffer and exact Vengeance for what he did.”
*We then see Daredevil look down from the rooftop of an apartment building as we witness police arrive and are met with the beaten and bruised criminals tied-up and left behind on the stoop of the dilapidated apartment building. Daredevil watches emotionless before taking out a small notecard with an address on it. 405 W 59th St, New York. Daredevil then swings away via his Billy Clubs.*
“And I haven’t. Not yet at least.”
“And what did this individual do?”
“He touched and kidnapped a kid. Child Porn. Sexual Harassment. And worst of all...”
*A shadow appears above the priest sending fear throughout his body, the horned shadow peers over the servant of God before a fist breaks through the screen separating them. Facing the man was Daredevil still covered in the blood and injuries from his previous battles, he glares into the pastor's eyes and says with venom in his voice.*
“He pretends to be a servant of God!”
*Minutes later, a large door slowly opens up shedding light into a dark and damp basement. The shadow of Daredevil eclipses a young boy who recoils in fear with the appearance of Daredevil. Daredevil moves closer to the child slowly and hugs the young boy and shushes him.*
“Hush now. Don’t worry. I’m not gonna hurt you.”
*The child, now in Daredevil’s arms, begins to sob and hug the costumed hero as they make their way out of the basement and out of the church.*
“Let’s get you home to your mom and dad.”
*Hour pass before the police arrive and handcuff the pedophilic priest whose jaw and arms are severely broken with a note pinned to his chest with the words, ‘False Father’. Watching from above was Daredevil, kneeling on a gargoyle as the rain washes the blood from his costume and gloves. He stares down at his hands and his actions of tonight begin to engulf him. He quickly rushed off into the night and made it back to his apartment. The water drips off of his costume and wanders into his living room and slowly strips himself of his costume. Matt Murdock slumps into his seat and stares upwards with his grey eyes. Tears then begin to fall from his face at what he’s done. He slumps into his chair and then whispers.*
“Forgive me, father. For I have sinned.”
An old piece of writing from when I tried my hand at writing a short Daredevil story. It was originally submitted on Comics Amino where we were told to create Short Stories based on a comic character that we love. I wrote about Daredevil, he's one of my favorite Marvel characters. His world and the work that Frank Miller, Mark Waid, Brian Michael Bendis, Ed Brubaker, Charles Soule and currently Chip Zdarsky have shaped a character that is high on my list of Comic Book characters that I aspire to write for comics.
Writing this story, or anytime I try to write Daredevil, made me dive into deep parts of myself that I don't like to acknowledge. I was a very angry child and repressed alot of that anger, which then came out in short destructive bursts. So, I wrote this using that energy and I am somewhat glad of how it came out.
Please, if you need to talk to someone about your mental problems and stress. Do so, there is nothing to lose from doing so.
